The Pathology care group includes Cellular Pathology, Laboratory Medicine, Immunology,
Microbiology and Molecular Pathology. All staff within the Pathology Care Group are managerially
responsible to the Divisional Clinical Director, Dr Trevor Smith. Dr Hannah Markham and Dr Mark
Walker are the Clinical Leads of the Cellular Pathology Department. The Medical Director and
Chief Executive of the Trust appoint the DCD. All consultants come within the divisional system
and are expected to participate in the management of the clinical service.

In addition, there are eleven Specialty
Registrars in the department, rotating
with Salisbury, Portsmouth, and
Chichester. In accordance with the Royal
College guidelines, all Wessex trainees
rotate to an attachment in Paediatric
Pathology for a longer period of 4 weeks
per attachment. Some Specialty
Registrars from out of Wessex Deanery
departments undertake their Paediatric
and Perinatal Pathology attachments
also at Southampton. The department is
approved for training by the Royal
College of Pathologists.
