The CAMHS Liaison Team
The Paediatric Liaison (Hospital CAMHS) team operates between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday
and takes referrals from medical, nursing and allied professionals within Child Health, and other
areas in the hospital where children and young people under the age of 18 are nursed.
The team provides assessment and management of a variety of problems including emotional or
adjustment problems, learning issues, physical difficulties, problems with everyday function,
behavioural problems, as well as psychiatric problems such as depression, self harming or eating
disorders.
Part of the work of the team is helping young people and their families in adjusting to chronic
illness and developing coping strategies. The team provides daily input to the management of
certain groups of inpatients, for instance young people suffering from anorexia nervosa.
Forms of input include individual work/ cognitive behavioural therapy, family work, parenting
support, medication and liaison with local CAMHS services. The team also provides staff teaching
and support, particularly regarding dealing with emotionally traumatic or worrying situations,
whether or not this is related to a child with a psychiatric illness.
Within the Children's Hospital there are close working relationships with paediatric consultants,
junior doctors, the multidisciplinary team and paediatric psychology (led by Dr Angela Griffin).
The post holder will have close working relationships with Dr Charlie Keys, clinical lead for Child
Health, Jenna Burchmore, Matron for Paediatric liaison and Bursledon House and Sarah Eales,
Mental Health Matron for the Trust.
Inreach Liaison Team
This is a separate team based in the children's hospital but hosted by Hampshire & Isle of Wight
Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust which provides a response to psychiatric emergencies in the
under 18 age group within the hospital. They provide a 7 day assessment and liaison service to
children and young people who attend the emergency department with deliberate self-harm or
suicidal ideation and will support the young person through their treatment pathway if required for
a period of up to 72 hours. The Inreach Liaison team works closely with the UHS Paediatric Liaison
Team to provide a robust transition if young people require a longer admission.
