MAIN DUTIES
Clinical Duties
• You will have joint responsibility for provision of the Cellular Pathology service with other
consultants within their specialist teams.
• You will attend and contribute to appropriate clinical pathological meetings and case
discussions, and to liaise with clinical colleagues to ensure a high quality diagnostic service in
their areas.
• You will have the opportunity to contribute to delivery of the adult autopsy service. If so, this will
include performing autopsies at the request of the Coroner; and you will be expected to
supervise junior medical staff conducting Coronial autopsies. As such, 50% of the time
allocated to performing Coronial autopsies will be included in the job plan.
• You will have the use of an office equipped with an appropriate microscope and a desktop
computer with printer, which has access to the NHSnet and World Wide Web.
Training and Teaching Duties:
• Teaching and examination of medical students and doctors under training is an important
part of the normal commitments and time for these activities will be included in your job plan.
You may be expected to participate in undergraduate teaching and assessment.
• You will be required to participate in teaching and training postgraduate medical staff. This will
involve the supervision of trainee pathologists in the description of macroscopic surgical
specimens, selection of blocks for histology and reporting of surgical slides, taking ultimate
responsibility for the content of the report. The Southampton department possesses several
multi-headed microscopes for teaching.
• Should you wish to undertake an additional defined educational role within the medical school,
additional funding may be available from the University to support such activities.
