TEACHING & RESEARCH
The Pathology department has a very strong tradition of providing high quality post-graduate
training. It hosts the Year 1 Histopathology School, one of the original three Histopathology
schools in England sponsored by the Department of Health. Following the success of this
initiative, there is now an England-wide network of 11 schools.
Our consultants also provide SpR training. Read more about this here
The Cellular Pathology department as a whole has an important undergraduate teaching
commitment, funded by the Medical School. Undergraduate teaching is based on an
innovative systems course and members of the department are involved in lectures, tutorials
and autopsy demonstrations.
• In years 1 and 2, pathology is a component of a series of systems-based courses.
• Year 3 includes the option of a Student Selected Unit in tumour pathology for medical
students.
• Year 4 includes a study-in-depth during which students complete a project under the
direction of a supervisor; this lasts eight months (approximately half-time) and the post
holder will have the opportunity to take part in the supervision of these students.
